The Jeanne Madry Young collection comprises over 100 photographs documenting the Andre/Madry/Hayman/Young family as they lived and worked in and around Idaho’s Treasure Valley. Images in the collection date from the late 1890s to the 1990s.
The Andre family settled in southern Idaho circa 1898 when patriarch Charles Edward Andre and matriarch Amanda Chouteau Dodge moved from Ste. Genevieve, Missouri to a homestead located outside of Nampa. The Andre family later relocated closer to the center of Nampa and lived in a house on 12th Avenue South.
Highlights from the collection include the Andre’s homestead near Nampa, Idaho, the Andre family orchestra, gardening, and bee keeping. Many images feature Erma (Andre) Madry Hayman, the second to youngest child of Edward and Amanda’s thirteen children. Photographs show her life in Boise, her children, including daughter Jeanne Madry Young, her grandchildren, and the River Street neighborhood.
Included in the collection is an oral history interview with Jeanne Madry Young as well as a discussion with Boise City Department of Arts & History staff about the collection of photographs.
